Context: Pre-session communication before Session 3

Hi Everyone,

A quick note about what to bring for our session this Saturday:

We’ll be working with patterns that require contact with the floor, and some of these movements take time to understand. If you find it difficult to follow along without some padding, please bring either a small folded hand towel or a compact pad like this hiking pad. Over time, we encourage practicing without any padding. The approach to the practice dynamics we will introduce is to reduce discomfort; they may just require more time to develop for some.

As mentioned, we don’t recommend large exercise/yoga mats. The cushioning dampens the sensory feedback that’s valuable for developing awareness of the movements, and the predefined size, shape, and fixed location can create boundaries that limit freedom of movement across Baseworks applications. We really encourage you to move around the room and periodically reorient yourself—to see us comfortably, change perspective, and shift how you position yourself in the physical space as the dynamic aspects of the practice change.

Looking ahead: We hope the pre-study assignment is going well. If you’d like to reference anything from last week while working through this assignment, here’s the Session 3 summary

Remember—if you’re crammed for time across other commitments, completing the full assignment (including segment reflections) is better than physically completing the practice labs. Get through the entire assignment first, then you can go back and do the practice labs where you have time before we meet. If you don’t get a chance to physically practice the practice labs, at least you will have watched them, and we can hit the ground running more productively. You can always return to those later. If any questions come up over the next couple of days, please post them here.

We have a full practice agenda planned for Saturday and may not have as much Q&A time as last week. The assignment between this session and the next will be much shorter, so if any questions come up and don’t get answered on Saturday, make a mental note and share them on the forum next week.

See you Saturday!

Key messaging points:

  • Props are transitional/minimal (towel or thin pad only)
  • No yoga mats (sensory feedback + spatial freedom rationale)
  • Assignment completion prioritized over practice lab participation
  • Limited Q&A time this session
  • Next assignment will be shorter

Related pedagogical principles:

  • Prop Usage Guidelines
  • Sensory feedback in learning
  • Spatial freedom in practice
  • Assignment pacing and completion strategies
