Session 3 Summary: Moderation, Calibration & Expanding the Form Vocabulary

[Le français suit]

Thank you all for Saturday’s session. We’ve posted a detailed summary of everything we covered, which you can find here on the forum.

Your Next Assignment – Due Before Session 4 (Saturday, February 7, 9:40-11:10): Complete Segment 4, all lessons Total time: approximately 87 minutes

This is the longest assignment, but you now have a full week to work through it. As mentioned in the session, if finding time and space for the Practice Labs is challenging, we recommend going through all the content first just to complete the assignment, then revisiting the Practice Labs afterward. This way, you don’t need to be in a practice-conducive space to get through the material. Of course, if you have time to complete the Key Points and Practice Labs as intended while still finishing the assignment, please go ahead.

A Few Program Reminders:

We’re only covering the first five of ten segments in this study group. After completing five segments with us, you have the remainder of your three-month access to finish at your own pace. Completing the Primer within three months automatically extends your access to one year.

The Primer is one learning track on our platform. Other learning tracks are also available to you, including an extensive repository of practice applications—hundreds of hours of content developed and refined over the years. We’re also exploring continuation session options for this and previous cohorts, and future cohorts are open to previous participants at subsidized rates.

Coming Soon: We’ll post again before the next session with recommendations on what to bring to Session 4. Please stay tuned.

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday.

FRANCAIS

What to Bring This Saturday

Hi Everyone [Le Francais suit],

A quick note about what to bring for our session this Saturday:

We’ll be working with patterns that require contact with the floor, and some of these movements take time to understand. If you find it difficult to follow along without some padding, please bring either a small folded hand towel or a compact pad like this hiking pad. Over time, we encourage practicing without any padding. The approach to the practice dynamics we will introduce is to reduce discomfort; they may just require more time to develop for some.

As mentioned, we don’t recommend large exercise/yoga mats. The cushioning dampens the sensory feedback that’s valuable for developing awareness of the movements, and the predefined size, shape, and fixed location can create boundaries that limit freedom of movement across Baseworks applications. We really encourage you to move around the room and periodically reorient yourself—to see us comfortably, change perspective, and shift how you position yourself in the physical space as the dynamic aspects of the practice change.

Looking ahead: We hope the pre-study assignment is going well. If you’d like to reference anything from last week while working through this assignment, here’s the Session 3 summary.

Remember—if you’re crammed for time across other commitments, completing the full assignment (including segment reflections) is better than physically completing the practice labs. Get through the entire assignment first, then you can go back and do the practice labs where you have time before we meet. If you don’t get a chance to physically practice the practice labs, at least you will have watched them, and we can hit the ground running more productively. You can always return to those later. If any questions come up over the next couple of days, please post them here.

We have a full practice agenda planned for Saturday and may not have as much Q&A time as last week. The assignment between this session and the next will be much shorter, so if any questions come up and don’t get answered on Saturday, make a mental note and share them on the forum next week.

See you Saturday!

[English translation] Sore (with a grain of salt)

I know I’m not supposed to say it, but I’m sore ;-). The form sequences were tough, and I got caught up in it without realizing it. In short, my quadriceps are aching and my abductors are still wondering what happened.

On a more technical note, my practice calendar on the Baseworks site is doing “free games.” Yesterday, February 4th, I did three short practices that were logged on the 5th. Today, I did a short practice that was also logged as the 5th. Looking at it that way, I seem to be sore because I did nothing yesterday and gave it everything today, which is not the case.

In short: I misjudged my effort and the site skipped a day. I can’t wait to see you all on Saturday because on my own, the module practices were neither elegant (that’s an understatement), nor particularly conducive to focusing on anything other than “just getting through it.” I’ll end with 🤓a little emoji because I think it’s super important to approach practice with a good dose of humor. It helps me live with my current challenges and to take things, as they say, with a grain of salt.

Patrick — 2026-02-05

@mimi.robert.trudel

Merci pour ce partage!

The soreness is actually useful information—it tells you something about how you were engaging with the practice. The fact that you noticed you got caught up without realizing it is the important part. That awareness is exactly what we’re developing.

Going forward, if you find yourself in “just get through it” mode, that’s usually a signal to dial back. When practicing alone, if you’re unsure about intensity, less is almost always the better choice. The in-person sessions will help calibrate this, but the principle applies everywhere: strain and fatigue work against the kind of focused attention we’re building.

As for the calendar, the site defaults to UTC. You can change your time zone on the Practice History page here: https://practice.baseworks.com/practice-history/, and that will correct the dates. See the attached picture to see what that looks like.

À samedi!

Manon Beaudoin — 2026-02-06

Long story short: j’ai dormi deux heures.

Session 4 Summary (2/7/26): Intensity Modification & Effort

[Le français suit]

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Session 4 yesterday. The detailed summary is now available here: Session 4 Summary: Intensity Modification & Effort

In this summary, you’ll also find references to the research of Paul Cisek and the work of dancer Martin Kilvady, which we discussed during the session.

**Next Assignment (for Session 5): **Please complete Segment 5, Lessons 5.1-5.4, before Sunday. This assignment is only 29 minutes total (7 min theory, 13 min Key Points, 9 min practice)—much shorter than last week’s assignment. If you have extra time, consider using the Smart Revisit feature to review previous Practice Labs.

Extended Session Next Sunday: For those who are able, we will extend Session 5 beyond the scheduled time (12:10-13:50). We plan to continue until approximately 14:30, which will give us more time for practical application and to cover additional material. There is no extra charge for this—just stay if your schedule allows.

See you Sunday.

[English above]

🩵

I would like to express once again how much I appreciate this course. I regret not having more time this semester—which has turned out to be far busier than I had anticipated—because I would love to practice these powerful and constructive movements more often outside the weekend sessions.

The very subtle yet deeply transformative work of the postures and transitions allows for a profound learning of the body’s limits and of the space that can be found within them, in order to gently push those limits and strengthen the deep musculature. This, in turn, supports balance and stability, while also cultivating flexibility, fluidity, and freedom of movement.

This practice is not easy, and it requires an immense level of attentive presence and embodied mindfulness. This is also an aspect of the work that I find particularly rich and meaningful. We often say that we learn through our mistakes, and I believe that pain, within the context of this practice, can be part of that learning process. The intelligence of Basework should not lead us into pain when the practice is performed correctly; however, when pain does arise, it can still become part of the learning process—an indication that helps us refine our understanding of the body’s intelligence and movement patterns.

When discomfort arises somewhere in the body, it may be useful to ask: which parts of the body are over-activating while others are not sufficiently engaged? Could the area where I feel pain be doing half the work right now, in exchange for a better overall distribution of activation?

I also had a more concrete question. Since beginning this training, I’ve noticed that I feel a strong urge to invent movements when I take time to move on my own at home—after watching the videos or at other moments. At times, it feels as though my body wants to explore new shapes, positions, or postures, while remaining fully conscious in order to ensure a healthy distribution of activation. I would be very curious to hear the instructors’ perspective on this.

Session 6 Summary (2/22/26): Integration & Partner Practice

[Le français suit]

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Session 6. The detailed summary is now available here: Session 6 Summary: Integration & Partner Practice

This session focused on integration—moving through forms with less stopping, exploring the opposition between shoulders and spinal movement, and practicing with partners to develop awareness of alignment and midline positioning. We also introduced Heel-Sit, Horizontal Shoulder Flex, and Shoulder Flex Headlock with their distinctive arm movements and opposition dynamics.

With this session, you’ve now completed the first five segments of the Baseworks Primer. Congratulations on reaching this milestone.

What Comes Next: Next week is our final session together at Circuit Est. From here, you can continue through the remaining Primer content at your own pace, and we’ll remain available through the Forum to answer questions.

With the exception of March 15th, all sessions will be held on Saturdays. These are separate practice sessions for those who’ve completed our Study Groups. The practice sessions will focus more on practical application, more forms and variations, set and transition practice, going a lot deeper into the material. We’ll follow up with the full schedule in a post here on the platform within the next couple of days. And we will provide more context about how to continue at the end of our last session this coming Sunday.

What Comes Next: Next week is our final session together at Circuit Est. From here, you can continue through the remaining Primer content at your own pace, and we’ll remain available through the Forum to answer questions.

Continuing Weekly Sessions: As mentioned at the end of Session 6, we are pleased to announce that the weekly sessions will continue starting March 15th, through the end of June, in Mile End (Casgrain, near Laurier metro).
