Archival note. This is the core brand messaging document used for pitching Baseworks and YogaJaya. It predates the current voice conventions and uses language (e.g., “fitness,” “workout,” exclamation marks) that does not match current voice direction. Baseworks Method — Definitions
Section titled “Baseworks Method — Definitions”Core Definition
Section titled “Core Definition”Baseworks method is based on making the person aware of the physical, psychological, sensory, and cognitive limitations, unique to each individual, and guiding them through a step-by-step process of working around these limitations. The method works through interrupting unconscious motor programs, redefining the movement task goals. Basically, it makes you aware of what your brain unconsciously tells your muscles to do.
Simple Definition
Section titled “Simple Definition”Baseworks is a psycho-physical training modality that helps anyone better feel and understand the body while developing strength, flexibility, and better control over one’s movements.
Industry-Oriented Definition
Section titled “Industry-Oriented Definition”Baseworks Method is an approach to movement and physical practice, with certain principles and logic that can be applied to common exercises or any movement that can be conducted without momentum, which results in allocating the attention and engaging the muscles in a specific way not commonly found in daily life or most exercise modalities. This leads to the “break-down” of the pre-existing movement vocabulary, improvement in sensory resolution, better control over movements, and promotes a more intuitive understanding of one’s limitations.
Physical Intelligence
Section titled “Physical Intelligence”Tagline: Your Guide to Physical Intelligence
Physical intelligence (PQ) is the ability to intuitively understand the body, be comfortable with it, read its sensory signals, know how to engage muscles, effortlessly maintain good posture and learn new movement skills.
The Neuroscience Behind Baseworks
Section titled “The Neuroscience Behind Baseworks”Most exercise methods focus on targeting muscles, which are the end effectors in the 3-step process of movement production (1-Plan, 2-Program, 3-Execute), leaving the Steps 1 and 2 to the subconscious brain systems.
Baseworks method formulates the movement task goals in a way that makes the Step 1 more conscious, allowing for more effective modification of motor programs at Step 2, leading to more effective learning and relearning.
Baseworks also considers how neuromuscular action and perception work in a bidirectional cycle, and how actions selected for execution tend to inhibit other actions. Using its original applications such as Distributed Activation with Micromovements, the training gradually increases the amount of sensory information available to our awareness and targets the parietal aspect of many frontoparietal functions. It stimulates neuroplasticity, strategically using the “neurons that fire together wire together” principle and brain mechanisms similar to “circular reactions” which guide motor learning in infancy.
History
Section titled “History”Baseworks method was developed in Japan by Patrick Oancia based on his 20+ years of experience of teaching various movement modalities. The method has been continuously optimized to target “physical intelligence” — the ability to intuitively understand the body, which is often limited in individuals with no athletic/movement practice background. Baseworks method uniquely targets the subconscious processes in perception and learning, making them more conscious and stimulating neuroplasticity. It has been tested and refined on thousands of students who had practiced it in Tokyo and worldwide.

YogaJaya Background
Section titled “YogaJaya Background”YogaJaya was founded by Patrick Oancia in 2003 in Tokyo, Japan. Collective attendance of over 500,000 students across 40,000 teaching hours. Hundreds of specialized events and workshops; featured in over 100 press/media publications worldwide. One of the first studios in Japan to offer Yoga Alliance accredited courses.
Problems Identified in the Yoga Industry
Section titled “Problems Identified in the Yoga Industry”- Most students do not progress much (unless they already come from an established athletic background)
- Students come and go, very few stay committed to regular practice
- Many people get injured and/or never really understand how the practice can benefit them in an unambiguous way
- Looking at most students, it is obvious that they have no idea what they are doing, no understanding of their bodies, no defined goals
To solve these problems, Patrick developed the Baseworks syllabus and teaching methodology — now a standalone conditioning method, but due to its roots is ideal for yoga teacher training and yoga classes to ensure safety and efficacy of learning.
On the “Indian Roots” of Yoga
Section titled “On the “Indian Roots” of Yoga”- Modern international postural yoga (even when taught by teachers of Indian ethnicity) has very little to do with its spiritual and philosophical predecessor
- Modern international postural yoga has developed under heavy Western influence
- Therefore, Baseworks separates the historical Indian yoga (as a spiritual practice) from what’s commonly now understood as “yoga” in the West
- Baseworks offers an approach to physical practice in a way that solved common problems of the modern yoga industry
