NODAA is a framework for Baseworks instructors that structures the available channels for delivering instruction. The acronym stands for:

  • N — Narrate: The primary vehicle of instructions; verbal narration is the main channel through which principles and movement patterns are communicated during practice
  • O — Observe: Watching students to decide which instructions to add based on their individual needs — which breakdown is happening, which principle is being neglected
  • D — Demonstrate: The visual channel; showing the movement rather than (or in addition to) narrating it
  • A — Assist: Two forms:
    • Non-physical: Pointing out what isn’t working and encouraging the student to self-correct
    • Physical: Touching the person to help them understand the intended position or movement
  • A — Assess: The reflection cycle — after teaching, reflecting on how the session went, what worked, what could be improved

NODAA reminds instructors that verbal narration, while primary in Baseworks, is not the only available channel. Each channel carries different information and engages the learner differently. Assessing after each session closes the feedback loop that mirrors the iterative refinement process at the individual teaching level.

  • WHILE-NOT-IF-DO — the companion instructional algorithm governing how narration is structured
  • Simultaneity — the challenge NODAA helps instructors navigate
  • Communicability — NODAA is a tool for maximizing communicability in the teaching context
