Baseworks Practice
Section titled “Baseworks Practice”In Baseworks, depending on the context, we use this term in one of the following ways:
- a structured application of the Baseworks Method / Approach.
- the practice of any of the Baseworks Modules.
Baseworks Method / Approach
Section titled “Baseworks Method / Approach”In Baseworks, depending on the context, we use this term in one of the following ways:
- a movement practice, which consists of a set of rules that specify how to move the body in a particular way with the aims of improving: body awareness, control over the movements, strength, flexibility, balance, relaxation.
- a set of conceptual and applied tools that may be used as a conditioning method to improve physical condition, physical, athletic and mental performance.
Baseworks Movement Principles
Section titled “Baseworks Movement Principles”In Baseworks, we use this term in the following way:
- a conceptual framework that captures the key strategies for application and simultaneous application of Baseworks Movement Patterns.
Baseworks Movement Patterns
Section titled “Baseworks Movement Patterns”In Baseworks, depending on the context, we use this term in one of the following ways:
- movement patterns that are characteristic of Baseworks.
- movement patterns that are applied to different macro positions and macro movements of the body.
- a key methodological tool in Baseworks Method.
Although the term “Baseworks Movement Patterns” may be used preferentially to describe patterns that can be identified visually, the term is also used as:
- a synonym of Baseworks Muscle-Coactivation Patterns (e.g. flexion-extension-flexion structured movement of the spine).
Baseworks Muscle-Coactivation Patterns
Section titled “Baseworks Muscle-Coactivation Patterns”In Baseworks, we use this term in the following way:
- a result of simultaneous application of several Baseworks movement patterns. For example in the case of Forearm Plank, “tractioning the forearms forward” and “tractioning the toes back” while “drawing the shoulders down” results in coactivation of multiple muscle groups. In this case, simultaneous application of these three Baseworks Movement Patterns can be referred to as a Baseworks Muscle-Coactivation Pattern.
The term “Baseworks Muscle-Coactivation Patterns” may be used preferentially to describe patterns that can be felt, but not necessarily seen if performed without exaggeration (e.g. “drawing the shoulders down”). At the same time, another way we use this term in Baseworks, is as:
- a synonym of Baseworks Movement Patterns.
Movement Pattern
Section titled “Movement Pattern”In Baseworks, depending on the context, we use this term in one of the following ways:
- a body movement or a limb configuration that is repeated over and over in a particular physical practice application, as prescribed by the practice.
- a body movement or a limb configuration that is repeated in everyday life and may be characteristic of a particular person or a particular lifestyle.
Control
Section titled “Control”In Baseworks, depending on the context, we use this term in one of the following ways:
- the capacity of an individual to perform a movement according to the intent.
- the capacity of an individual to prevent the movement of one part of the body while moving another part.
- the quality of movement characterized by a smooth and agile progression.
- a synonym of Motor Control.
Ignition
Section titled “Ignition”In Baseworks, depending on the context, we use this term in one of the following ways:
- a type of preparatory practice that is done to first measure the current condition of the body, and then calibrate the appropriate approach toward the Body of a Module practice session.
- a structural component of a practice session. The first part of a “Complete” practice session of any Baseworks Module.
Assimilation
Section titled “Assimilation”In Baseworks, depending on the context, we use this term in one of the following ways:
- a type of practice that takes place at the end of a practice session in order to “digest” the effects of the physical practice.
- a structural component of a practice session. The third (the final) part of a “Complete” practice session of any Baseworks Module.
Body (of practice session)
Section titled “Body (of practice session)”In Baseworks, we use this term in the following way:
- a structural component of a Module practice session. Embedded between the Ignition and Assimilation, the Body of a practice session is the main part of the session.
In Baseworks, depending on the context, we use this term in one of the following ways:
- any short sequence of movements, that may be used as a “mold” to apply Baseworks Movement Patterns.
- a building block of the Body of a Module practice session.
On the Baseworks Practice platform, Forms are presented as Nodes in the following format:
- a video outlining the details of one Form’s movement sequence with all the corresponding Baseworks Movement Patterns.
Module
Section titled “Module”In Baseworks, depending on the context, we use this term in one of the following ways:
- a selection of Forms, with specific Learning Objectives.
- a component of Modular Practice.
FOUNDATION and ELEMENTS are 2 Modules currently available on the platform.
Modular Practice
Section titled “Modular Practice”In Baseworks, depending on the context, we use this term in one of the following ways:
- the practice system of Baseworks Practice, where one cycles/alternates through the practice sessions of different modules.
- an approach to physical practice, where one participates in a wide range of activities and practices, alternating between them, utilizing the learning outcomes in each Module to recalibrate the practice experience/progress of another Module.
Although the term “Modular” highlights the existence and characteristics of the Modules, we also use this term as:
- a synonym of Cyclical Practice.
Note:
Baseworks concept of “Modular Practice” can be aligned with some other approaches to the learning of non-movement disciplines (for example, the Montessori schooling system).
[Module] Practice Session
Section titled “[Module] Practice Session”In Baseworks, depending on the context, we use this term in one of the following ways:
- a type of practice, where forms, specific to a Module are organized on a timeline and are intended to be completed without interruption from the beginning to end, according to a prescribed set of rules with the application of the corresponding Baseworks Movement Patterns.
- a Node format on the Baseworks Practice Online Platform, consisting of a video of a practice session.
Cyclical Practice
Section titled “Cyclical Practice”In Baseworks, we use this term in the following way:
- an approach to practice, where one repetitively alternates between practicing different types of tasks.
Although the term “Cyclical” highlights the action of alternating and revisiting the modules, we also use this term as:
- a synonym of Modular Practice.
In Baseworks, depending on the context, we use this term in one of the following ways:
- a pattern of Baseworks Muscle-Coactivation patterns, which can be used as a tool to develop a broad range of skills and competencies, both immediately physical and method-specific.
- Learning Objectives that can be attained through practice with this Focus and through a set of Movement and Muscle-Coactivation Patterns, which give rise to the Focus, formulated within the Baseworks conceptual and methodological framework.
- a theme or topic of a practice session, which highlights certain aspects of the method.
Learning Objectives
Section titled “Learning Objectives”Baseworks Learning Objectives should be distinguished from the individual’s goals of the practice and byproducts of the practice.
Improved strength, flexibility, mobility, control over movements, stability, relaxation, posture, sleep, mood, resilience, mental performance etc are the byproducts of the practice.
Since the Baseworks Method requires the participant to abandon habitual movement patterns and instead use the Baseworks Movement Patterns and the Baseworks Principles, we define the learning objectives also in the language of our methodology.
The method is meant to develop the individual’s competencies in the 3 dimensions of Sense, Control and Adapt.
On the level of the “Module” (e.g. FOUNDATION and ELEMENTS), we often use the concept of Baseworks Focus to describe the Learning Objectives.
Cluster
Section titled “Cluster”On the Baseworks Practice Online Platform, this is:
- a higher level of content organization.
Within Clusters, there are Nodes.
On the Baseworks Practice Online Platform, this is:
- a lower level of content organization.
Nodes are organized into Clusters either by topic or by format.
