Section titled “Transcript”Thank you very much for enrolling in our baseworks introductory online course.
My name is Patrick Oancia and I’m the founder and co-developer of the Baseworks method.
So we’re using simple exercises throughout the course to help you understand Baseworks both through direct experience and conceptually.
Before we dive into the course structure in our next lesson, let’s talk about the core problem we’re working with in Baseworks.
Here’s something interesting to think about.
We all have basically the same muscles, but some people can control them much better than others.
Conversely, while we all have similar spines, some people maintain naturally better posture than others, and some people live without tension, while others carry a lot of tension with them throughout their lives.
So in relation to these points, why do you think all of this is?
There are different ways to answer these questions, but in base works, we look at something that often gets overlooked.
We approach movement and behavior by focusing on perception and awareness.
Think about habits.
They’re often tough to change because they’re automatic and we don’t really think about them.
This also goes for how we move, how we feel, and how we think.
It’s often easier to learn something completely new rather than to change something your body’s already used to.
An analogy would be if we look at movement like driving a car, what we’re actually dealing with isn’t learning how to drive, it’s more like being in a self-driving car and figuring out how to hack back the control of that car.
And you don’t really learn these things in driving school.
So you can think while learning typical movements like going to driving school, Baseworks is like learning to hack your self-driving car.
In Baseworks, the first thing that we’re trying to notice is what our bodies are doing automatically.
So we focus on how we make decisions and how we use our attention and energy.
Once we can really see this clearly, we work on new ways to control our muscles and behavior.
A good thing to remember as you practice baseworks is that baseworks is not about what you do, but more about how you do it.
So in baseworks, when we do something like a squat, we’re not trying to do your normal squat, but rather we’re trying to understand how your body normally moves in that type of movement, and try to discover new ways to control your body in that specific movement.
For this course, really, all that we ask is that you leave your preconceptions about movement or what you’ve been doing in the past at the door, and try to just follow along with the movements, the way we describe them as closely as possible, even if they seem different to what you’re normally used to.
So on that note, let’s dive into the next lesson.
