Lisa Cron — Wired for Story

We’re wired to avoid change. Ask us to change, and we reach for the opt out button. We’re hardwired to fight change, often at all costs. Our basic resistance is, in fact, a longstanding survival mechanism. Evolutionarily speaking, in almost every instance, resisting change didn’t make us stubborn, it made us smart. As long as you’re surviving, even if you’re miserable, you’re safe. So why rock the boat?

Lisa Cron

This quote comes from a thought-provoking book that uses deep facts about our brain’s evolution to improve storytelling. Yet, this idea doesn’t just apply to writing — it touches every part of human interaction. It’s about empathy, learning and teaching, copying what we observe, and our ability to change habits. It’s about our ability to transform ourselves.

As we often emphasize in Baseworks, “To overcome a limitation, we must first become aware of it”. Our resistance to change, once a powerful survival tool, can now limit us to merely existing rather than whole heartedly living.

As Lisa explains, being alive — but not very fulfilled or happy — is safe. But isn’t it interesting that the instinct keeping us safe could also be what’s stopping us from experiencing life fully?

First Colombia event series (March 2024, Bucaramanga) — 4 formats: public lecture, UNAB music workshop, clinician lecture, fundamentals workshop. Partners: MUKTI Espacio Vivo and UNAB. The Ryan Hurst Reflection is Asia’s commentary on the earlier Transmission episode, not a new conversation. Two sections appear duplicated in the source HTML (event cards repeat with minor copy variations between the two passes — kept the second variant which appears to be the edited version, dropping the earlier “sensorimotor → motor system and decision-making” wording in favour of the cleaner version). The April 2024 UNAB follow-up is a separate newsletter (campaign 88). Voice uses “transform/transformative” freely — acceptable in current formal copy but worth flagging if re-used.
