Change into a Belly-Slimming Constitution with Trendy Yoga — UOMO, Oct 2005 (JA)

Tags press-archiveyogajayauomojapanesepatrick

Publication: UOMO — Japanese men’s fashion/lifestyle magazine (Hearst Fujingaho); targets professional men in their 30s–40s Issue: 2005/10 (October 2005), pp.208–209 Article type: 2-page how-to yoga feature — four poses demonstrated with step-by-step instructions; celebrity experience diary column; Patrick photographed teaching; studio profile box Language: Japanese (confirmed) People named: Patrick Oancia (Kamitari/Kozoku — celebrity participant) YogaJaya logo: Present (top right — standard placement)

Duplicate note: J32 (uomo/uomo2005_10.pdf, 3.2MB) is a 2-page scan of the article pages only with Uomo/yogajaya header added — same content without the NAS cover label. J31 is the primary (5.2MB, cover label + 2 article pages).

First men’s magazine in the press archive. All prior coverage was women’s magazines (Classy, Grazia, Hanako, BAILA, JILLE, Yogini, Elle, Biteki, Vogue) or unisex culture/lifestyle publications (Warp, Brutus, Sotokoto, Target, Namaskar, ACCJ, Spa Asia). UOMO’s coverage marks the point at which YogaJaya was being positioned explicitly to a male audience in mainstream fashion press.

Celebrity participant — 神足氏 (Kamitari/Kozoku): A prominent Japanese journalist and magazine editor, known as one of the original editors of Hanako magazine and a well-known cultural commentator. His participation gives the article a “celebrity experience diary” frame — a format where a recognizable figure reports on their first encounter with an activity. The irony that Hanako’s original editor is now the subject of a YogaJaya feature in UOMO is worth noting.

Main headline (vertical, right margin):

流行りのヨガで腹やせ体質に変わる!

Translation: “Change into a belly-slimming constitution with trendy yoga!”

Sub-heading:

Translation:

“Taking on the yoga that’s popular even among celebrities. What was chosen: the most basic Hatha Yoga. ‘If you do it every day you get addicted!’ — Mr. Kamitari also enjoys the practice.”

(Hatha Yoga)

Pose 1 — VRKSASANA (TREE POSE)

Feel like you yourself are becoming a tree. Posture correction effects too.”

Starting position: feet hip-width, heels slightly outward, toes relaxed, knees straight. Step 1: inhale, stretch both arms straight up, elbows straight Step 2: exhale, stretch arms further upward over 5 seconds. Belly should not protrude forward. 10 reps × 3 sets.

Pose 2 — UTTANASANA

High-difficulty yoga-style bend-stretch. Focus on belly and thighs.”

Standing forward fold. Relax slightly inward, bend knees gently, fold at waist, both hands to floor. Focus on belly and thighs, inhale bringing chest toward thighs over 5 seconds. Then exhale, stretch thigh muscles, aim tailbone skyward. 10 × 3 sets.

Pose 3 — MARYCHIASANA

Twisting movement. Cut the excess flesh on the sides.”

Seated spinal twist. Right arm embraces left knee, left hand to floor behind. Exhale over 5 seconds, twist upper body with head together. Keep spine always perpendicular to floor. Left-right 10 × 3 sets.

Pose 4 — NAVASANA VARIATION

For lower belly, this is the best! If you keep doing it, the effect is surprising.”

Boat pose variation. Lie on floor. Raise legs to ceiling keeping head slightly raised, core engaged, extend arms along body. Hold the position for 5 seconds. Then exhale slowly, lower legs to 50cm above floor. Hold 3–5 seconds. 10 × 3 sets.

Translation: “Mr. Kamitari receiving instruction from Teacher Patrick at the yoga studio. He is serious.”

Patrick is visible in two photos: (1) seated in Marychiasana-adjacent position facing the celebrity student, wearing a dark sleeveless tank top with a large lotus/flower print — YogaJaya branded — and with tattoos visible; (2) a smaller candid of Patrick adjusting or assisting the student in the studio. A bald man (possibly Cameron Harris or another instructor) visible in the studio background.

●profile (p.208, bottom right)

Translation:

“Patrick Oancia. A handsome teacher with a modeling background. The teacher, who was reportedly fat in the past, personally proved belly-slimming through yoga.”

Note on framing: This is the most fitness/body-transformation-centric description of Patrick in any press article. “モデル出身” (modeling background) does not appear in any other article in the archive. “昔太っていたという” (“reportedly fat in the past”) is also unconfirmed by other sources but follows the article’s body-transformation hook for a male fitness readership. UOMO has adapted Patrick’s profile to fit the magazine’s fitness-feature format — this is not a direct quote from Patrick and should not be taken as a primary biographical claim. Compare with: Spa Asia (J23) framing Patrick through personal philosophical backstory; Sotokoto (J06) through creative lifestyle; ACCJ (E12) through professional depth and Canadian background.

(Celebrity experience column)

(Celebrity experience column)”

Section summary: The celebrity journalist/editor recounts his first experience doing yoga with Patrick. The column runs across the bottom of p.208 and the main narrative tone is personal reaction — surprise at the physical challenge and eventual enjoyment.

Key fragments (partial, small text at print resolution):

  • “身体を本来あるべき姿に戻す。ヨガの精神に共感” — “Returning the body to its original natural state. I sympathize with the spirit of yoga.”
  • Reference to Aoyama neighborhood and the studio’s setting
— “With the teacher’s support, the upper body just keeps twisting backward. My body was surprisingly flexible!”

Translation: “A hidden-gem yoga studio in Aoyama” — First use of “隠れ家的” (kakurega-teki, “hideaway-like / hidden gem”) as a descriptor for YogaJaya in the press archive. Frames the back-of-building Omotesando location as intimate and exclusive rather than prominent.

Parsed:

  • Address: 神宮前5-47-6 (confirmed consistent)
  • Trial: ¥1,000 / single: ¥3,000 / 4-class pass: ¥11,000
Men are most welcome” — first explicit male-welcome statement in the press archive; directly serves UOMO’s male readership
Daily-changing schedule” — matches JILLE Oct 2005 (J29) note that schedule varies; by October 2005 this dynamic programming is a standard talking point

Nike again — consistent with JILLE’s Nike credits in the same month (J29). Both October 2005 articles use Nike exclusively.

  • First men’s magazine: UOMO is the first men’s fashion publication in the entire press archive; marks the moment YogaJaya was actively presented to a mainstream male audience. Previous coverage was exclusively women’s or unisex publications
  • Patrick photographed teaching in the studio: Unlike earlier 2005 articles where Patrick appears in portraits or practice photos, here he is photographed actively instructing a named celebrity student — a shift from “who Patrick is” to “Patrick working with students”
  • Four Sanskrit form names with instruction: Vrksasana / Uttanasana / Marychiasana / Navasana Variation — detailed breath-integrated instructions across two pages; the most complete technical how-to in the press archive to this point
  • “Hidden-gem yoga studio” framing: “青山にある隠れ家的ヨガスタジオ” — contrasts with JILLE’s “well-known in Aoyama” from the same month; shows that different publications were framing the same studio with different angles simultaneously: established neighborhood landmark vs. intimate discovery
  • Patrick’s profile framing for men’s fitness audience: The “modeling background / fat-to-fit” description is the most visible example in the archive of how Patrick’s identity was being adapted for different editorial contexts; worth noting for the press page as an example of range of coverage framing
  • Celebrity participant cultural significance: 神足裕士’s involvement ties YogaJaya’s press to the core of Japanese magazine culture — he helped create the culture that was now covering the studio
  • “毎日変わるスケジュール” / dynamic schedule confirmed again: Third October 2005 article (alongside J29 JILLE and J27 BAILA) noting schedule flexibility; this was clearly in press kit materials by this point

  • October 2005 — UOMO joins BAILA (J27) and JILLE (J29) to form a three-article October cluster across major fashion titles; the month was a high-water mark for mainstream fashion press coverage
  • The men’s audience reach is significant for Baseworks: YogaJaya was not positioned as a women’s yoga studio. The UOMO coverage (and the “men are most welcome” language) documents an explicit co-ed positioning from the first year
  • The fitness/body-transformation framing in UOMO is the farthest point from Baseworks’ current philosophical positioning — useful to the press page as historical context of how the studio was reinterpreted for different audiences, not as a statement of mission
  • The celebrity-experience diary format was a standard editorial device in Japanese lifestyle magazines of the period; its use here places YogaJaya in the mainstream cultural flow

  • patrick · yogajaya-history · scene-context · press-page-lineage
  • Tier 2 (strong supporting): First men’s magazine in the archive; Patrick directly named and photographed teaching a named celebrity student; four Sanskrit forms with detailed breath instruction; “hidden-gem yoga studio” first use; “men are most welcome” explicit framing; two-page editorial with substantial editorial investment. The fitness/body-transformation framing is a limitation — it reduces Patrick’s profile — but the cultural placement (major men’s fashion magazine, celebrity participation, two full pages) is significant

  • J29-jille-2005-10 — same month; Nike credits in both; “well-known in Aoyama” vs. “hidden gem” — different framings of the same studio in October 2005
  • J27-baila-2005-10 — same month; third article in October 2005 cluster
  • J12-brutus-2005-06 — June 2005; Brutus is the other men’s-skewing publication in the archive; compare tone and framing
  • E12-accj-2005-06 — June 2005; ACCJ gives the most detailed English biography of Patrick; contrast with UOMO’s “modeling background / fat-to-fit” reduction
  • J06-sotokoto-2005-01 — January 2005; Sotokoto gives the richest early Patrick profile; compare with UOMO’s fitness reframing
