Guided practice. Theory in context

Baseworks Practice Sessions are structured, instructor-led practice within the Baseworks Method. You practice with real-time guidance, specific feedback, and alongside other practitioners working through the same framework.

The sessions are practice-oriented. Theory is present — woven into the practice itself, relevant to what you’re doing in the moment. For Baseworks alumni, the conceptual groundwork from prior programs carries directly into how you practice here. For experienced movers new to Baseworks, your existing movement background will help many of these concepts connect naturally.

This is a format for people who understand that the interesting part of any movement practice isn’t the first time you do something — it’s the fiftieth.

Who this is for

Past Baseworks participants

If you’ve completed any Baseworks program — a Study Group, a Study Lab, an intensive, or equivalent supervised study — you’re eligible to book directly. This includes participants from any city, any year.

Pricing reflects your history with the Method. We want continued practice to stay accessible for people who’ve committed to our programs — when logged in, your pricing tier is applied automatically. Details in the pricing section below.

People with a background in a physical discipline or profession

You don’t need to have studied Baseworks before. But you do need to come in with a real movement foundation — something that’s already changed how you think about your body.

Eligible Disciplines:

  • Professional Dance
  • Martial Arts
  • Parkour
  • Skateboarding
  • Physical Theatre
  • Circus Arts
  • Acting
  • Skiing / Snowboarding
  • Athletics
  • Gymnastics
  • Climbing
  • Contact Improvisation
  • Movement Education
  • Physiotherapy
  • Occupational Therapy

New to Baseworks? You’ll start with a single introductory session. If it resonates, you gain access to ongoing booking. New participants use the standard pricing structure.

What matters is the depth of your experience. The actual time dedicated to a practice or profession that requires precision, honest self-assessment, and ongoing technical development. The disciplines listed under Track B above are good examples. If your background is primarily recreational (occasional gym workouts, yoga classes, recreational dance), our Study Groups provide the structured introduction that makes Practice Sessions make sense. The intake form below will help you figure out which path fits.

70 minutes of guided practice

The format and the Method are consistent across every session. Progression comes through repeated engagement with the same framework — increasing precision and depth.

Each session is an opportunity to observe something about your movement that previous sessions couldn’t reveal. The Method develops perceptual skills — the ability to notice, discriminate, and respond to what is happening in the body. The movements stay the same. What you’re able to perceive in them changes.

The sessions are designed to build on each other. The framework stays consistent, but your relationship to it deepens with each session. What you work on in week three informs what you notice in week ten — even when the material looks the same on the surface.

Baseworks was developed over more than twenty years of daily practice and teaching, refined across thousands of learners. The sessions are led by the same people who built the Method — the feedback you receive comes from that depth of development.

COST

Pricing built on continued practice

We structure pricing to support continued practice. The more you’ve engaged with our programs, the more accessible continued practice becomes. Here’s how that works.

Single session — New to the Method

A single session for people new to Baseworks. Your first session is an opportunity to experience the Method. After your first session, you gain access to ongoing booking at the standard rates.

For practitioners who’ve completed qualifying Baseworks programs. Your pricing tier is applied automatically when logged in — the per-session rate decreases the more sessions you book in a single purchase.

Why we structure it this way. Studying Baseworks develops through sustained practice. The value of each session increases the more familiar you are with the framework — so pricing should make continued practice more accessible, not less. The sliding scale aligns the cost structure with how the practice actually works.

Proto Studio members & residents — If you’re a Proto Studio member or artist in residence, special rates may be available to you. Reach out with your Proto Studio email and we’ll confirm your access before your first session.

Intake form copy and logic are tracked separately. See Practice Sessions — Intake Form for the full scoring logic, step copy, and outcomes in both English and French.

The practice continues after you leave the studio

Everyone enrolled in Practice Sessions gets access to the Baseworks community forum. Practice raises questions — about what you’re noticing in a particular form, about how to refine something you’ve been working on, about what’s changing as your practice develops. The forum is where you can ask those questions and share what you’re observing.

Share your observations, ask questions, and get responses from other practitioners and from us directly. The forum connects you with people studying the Method across all of our programs — not only Practice Sessions.

Included with enrollment:

  • Access to the Baseworks community forum
  • A dedicated thread for Practice Sessions participants
  • Direct instructor responses between sessions
  • Connect with practitioners from Baseworks programs worldwide

I’m a professional dancer. Do I need to do the intake form?

Section titled “I’m a professional dancer. Do I need to do the intake form?”

Yes — the form is short. It helps us understand what you’re looking for and where Baseworks fits relative to what you already do. Most practitioners with serious technical backgrounds are pointed toward a first session directly.

I’ve been doing yoga and Pilates for years. Are the Practice Sessions a good starting point for me?

Section titled “I’ve been doing yoga and Pilates for years. Are the Practice Sessions a good starting point for me?”

Not directly. Yoga and Pilates develop consistency and body awareness, but the technical framework in Baseworks is structurally different. Complete the intake form to find out where you fit. For most people with this background, the Study Group is the right starting point.

Can I book specific session dates, or do I just buy credits?

Section titled “Can I book specific session dates, or do I just buy credits?”

You purchase session credits, then select your dates from your account dashboard after checkout. You can cancel individual sessions up to 24 hours before they begin. Credits can be used to book for sessions within the Spring season (March–June).

How does the alumni sliding scale subsidy work exactly?

Section titled “How does the alumni sliding scale subsidy work exactly?”

For Baseworks alumni: each additional session purchased in the same transaction reduces the per-session rate by 3.5%, up to a maximum of 49% for the full season of 16 sessions. Standard pricing also offers volume-based reductions, though at a more conservative scale. Both discounts are calculated per transaction — there’s no accumulation across separate orders.

I’ve studied Baseworks before — am I eligible for alumni pricing?

Section titled “I’ve studied Baseworks before — am I eligible for alumni pricing?”

Alumni pricing is available to participants who’ve completed a qualifying Baseworks program — this includes Study Groups (completing five or more in-person sessions within the cohort timeframe), Study Labs, intensives, certain international workshops, and students from our Tokyo studio. It also applies to people who’ve completed the full Primer curriculum. If you’ve done significant work with us in any format, anywhere in the world, you’re likely eligible. Your account will reflect this automatically. If our system is not recognizing you as an alumnus, contact us and we’ll confirm your status.

Sessions are conducted primarily in English. Participants who are more comfortable in French are welcome — Patrick and Asia will make an effort to explain the instructions in French.
