Section titled “Caption (copy-paste)”What does a muscle feel like from the inside when nothing is happening to it? Not sore, not stretched, not burning from effort. Just at rest.
For most people, the honest answer is nothing. The signal isn’t absent. The attention to detect it hasn’t been built.
Most physical practice is oriented to what it looks like, because that’s what can be photographed. Inner attention doesn’t show up in the frame. Patrick’s new article is about what develops when attention has somewhere to show up: a finer-grained capacity to detect internal sensations and hold attention on them long enough for something to register. The capacity carries. A developer catches the inconsistency in a passage that didn’t look like it needed a second read. A teacher notices which child has gone quiet. A forester picks up the early signs of a tree under stress. The same underlying skill.
